On November 7, 2018, Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company Life Member, Daniel Milford Hyatt, passed away at the age of 88. Mr. Hyatt was elected into the Fire Company on February 17, 1964. The following year he was elected Treasurer, serving through 1967. Mr. Hyatt took over at the beginning of a financially challenging period – the company had recently incorporated, making them independent from the town, and had taken out a large loan to build the new station. Mr. Hyatt instituted a budget, applied spending controls and worked to get the books in order. The Company began hosting weekly Bingo and a mail-in fund drive was sent out, both providing additional income. In 1967, Mr. Hyatt was able to budget enough money for the purchase of a much needed used 1939 Seagrave tiller and a new Seagrave pumper.
In 1968, Mr. Hyatt was elected Captain 1, the following year he moved to Lieutenant 1 and in 1970, he was the Vice President. After a year off from holding an officer position, he served as treasurer again, in 1972 and 1973. Mr. Hyatt managed the money from the recently completed land sale, providing financial stability. In 1972, the Company was able to purchase a new Seagrave tiller to replace the old one, as well as another new Seagrave pumper. He was instrumental in setting up the book keeping for Bingo and ensured that they were kept correctly, in case of audit. He also oversaw several successful fund drives, and took responsibility for fixing parking area and drainage problems around the fire station. Mr. Hyatt went to inactive status in 1976.
During his time in the company, Dan Hyatt distinguished himself with his financial acumen, attention to detail and strong work ethic. As Treasurer, he guided the Company through tough times, and an IRS audit. His hard work provided the membership with the ability to purchase needed equipment and top of the line apparatus used to protect the citizens of Leesburg and Loudoun County. His contributions are greatly appreciated and his friendship will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace.
The funeral is scheduled for Monday, November 12, 2018 at Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, VA with a reception to follow at the Leesburg Fire Hall, 215 Loudoun Street. Pastor Glenn Hughes of Staunton, VA will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dan’s life. Condolences can be sent to www.colonialfuneralhome.com.
